Officially recognized in Canada since 1996, this is a time to honour the contributions and struggles of peoples of African descent. This could also be a time for congregations to make a commitment to becoming more culturally sensitive, racially inclusive, and justice-conscious. Union United in Montreal has been the home of a vibrant Black congregation for more than a century; Wilbur Howard became the church’s first Black Moderator in 1974. The leadership and participation of Black peoples and congregations continues today. But the commitment to becoming more culturally sensitive, racially inclusive, and justice-conscious continues year round.
